Questions
Who has to pay tax instalments in Canada?
You pay instalments if your net tax owing is more than $3,000 ($1,800 in Quebec) in the current year and in either of the two previous years.
When are CRA instalments due?
March 15, June 15, September 15 and December 15.
How much should each instalment be?
Use the CRA reminder amounts, or a quarter of last year’s net tax owing, or a quarter of this year’s estimate. The reminder option protects you from instalment interest.
What if I miss an instalment?
CRA charges instalment interest, and a penalty if the interest is more than $1,000. Paying later instalments early or more can reduce the interest.
