Etsy Seller Taxes in Canada
Selling on Etsy, eBay or Shopify is a business once you sell regularly to make a profit — with inventory, fees and shipping to track.
What etsy and online sellers can usually deduct
- Cost of goods sold: materials or stock used for items sold
- Etsy listing, transaction and payment processing fees; Shopify subscription
- Shipping supplies and postage you pay
- Packaging, labels and photography
- Home studio or storage space share
Only the business part of a cost is deductible, and you need a receipt or record for each. See CRA's guide T4002.
GST/HST
Online sales count toward the $30,000 GST/HST limit. Platforms may collect GST/HST on some sales to Canadian buyers — check how your platform handles it before charging it yourself. Check with our GST/HST calculator.
Keep good records
Keep the platform's annual sales and fees report; report total sales as income and fees as expenses. Keep records for six years.
